The remaining gas is absorbed into 39% - 46% maleic acid solution in the washing tower with water. The maleic acid solution is dehydrated by azeotropic distillation using xylene as a dehydrating agent in the distillation tower to remove molecular water and free water. After dehydration, crude anhydride is added for vacuum distillation, and xylene and impurities therein are separated.
